Health benefits of consuming lemons

This article is my own personal research and should not be taken over advice from a medical professional.

100g of lemons contains just 29kcal, but also has 2.8g grams of fibre, 138mg of potassium and 88% of your Vitamin C for the day. These are just a few of the many lemon health benefits:

1. Flavonoids

Citrus fruits are high in flavonoids (these are the nutrients famously found in red wine and dark chocolate). There is evidence that these flavonoids can reduce cancer growth, help reduce inflammation in the arteries, and that they can help balance cholesterol levels and blood pressure.

2. Healthy blood pressure

Studies have shown that people with high blood pressure can benefit from drinking lemon water. It is believed that you get the most health benefits when you consume it warm and on an empty stomach.

3. Vitamin C is believed to help prevent cancer

Vitamin C is a type of antioxidant. Antioxidants fight free radicals in the body – these free radicals are believed to cause cell damage which in turn increases the likelihood of the formation of cancerous tumors. Because of the large quantities of vitamin C in lemons it is believed that they could be helpful in doing this.

4. Vitamin C is Believed to boost the immune system

Vitamin C is also very important for healthy immune system function as some of the cells which make up the system accumulate Vitamin C and need it to function properly. A high intake of Vitamin C is therefore likely to be linked with an enhanced immune system function whilst a low intake is probably associated with a weakened one.

5. Preventing asthma and reducing it’s symptoms

Lemons can help reduce mucus which should make breathing easy for anyone with asthma. Also the citric acid found in lemons is believed to clear and strengthen lung tissue which helps asthma symptoms

This doesn’t mean that lemons or lemon juice will transform your health or cure any diseases, however the health benefits of consuming them should not be ignored. A great thing to have if you have a cold is warm lemon water and honey – the Vitamin C should help boost your immune system, the citric acid should help strengthen your lungs and the anti-inflammatory powers of the lemon will help get red of excess mucus. It’s much cheaper than having a Lemsip.

This article explains why honey is also great for colds.
